Dr Matt Lunt is a Dstl Chief Scientist in the field of Advanced Materials, focusing primarily on structural materials; I have about 30 years’ experience working in defence materials S&T. I am a Principal Advisor to the UK MOD’s Advanced Materials Programme, where I lead Theme 1 Materials in Extreme Physical Environments, which include Ceramic Matrix Composites. I am the Associate Director of Dstl’s new Defence Materials Centre of Excellence and a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining. My deep technical expertise lies in jet engine propulsion materials, manufacturing and lifing and light alloys technology (aluminium, magnesium, titanium and beryllium). In 1998 I received a DPhil from the University of Oxford for research on the creep deformation of nickel-based superalloy single crystals, which was co-funded by EPSRC and DERA.
